Happy Labor Day!
Silence
When you think of silence, what comes to mind? For many, silence can feel awkward, uncomfortable, even boring. There are so many ways, to try to fill silence and avoid being alone with our thoughts. We fill it with noise- music, TV, videos, conversations, podcasts- and we fill it with constant activities and busyness.
Yet in Christian tradition, we recognize that silence, stillness and rest are vital to our physical, mental, and spiritual growth & well-being.
In 1 Kings, the prophet Elijah, is waiting for God on Mt. Horeb. As he waits, there is a great wind, "but the Lord was not in the wind." (19:11) Then there was an earthquake and a fire, but the Lord is not in the earthquake or fire!. Then comes a still small voice "like a light silent sound." (1 Kings 19:12) In the silence, Elijah hears God’s voice!
Today, we are called to rest from labor, but everyday, we are called to enter into that stillness and silence, to experience God's quiet voice & call. Take the time and meditate on this peaceful fact.
"Jesus, We Trust in You!"
